The first Solvay Kids event took place at our Alpharetta site on June 24, 2022. Organized by Alpharetta’s Societal Actions Committee, the event was designed to give employees’ children an insight into what we do at Solvay and encourage enthusiasm for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects.

While the site has organized similar events for local elementary school students in the past, this was the first event organized specifically for employees’ children. Almost 50 kids took part, all of whom were given a safety orientation before embarking on a site tour, which included visits to the compounding lines, mechanical laboratories, color lab, injection molding and additive manufacturing (3D printing). They also visited the application development lab, where they made individualized snap bracelets.

After the tours, the kids were able to observe a combustible dust explosion (from a safe distance) and then took part in a multitude of hands-on activities, including making slime, a chromatograph butterfly and a colored pellet pen, before finishing the day with a pizza party.

“Alpharetta’s community actions are collectively driven by the diverse and dedicated group of employees that make up our Societal Actions Committee. Solvay Kids, which was organized by the Educational Sub-Committee, proved a great opportunity to encourage employees’ children to engage with our work and generate enthusiasm for science in general. One 6-year-old was so impressed that he even asked his dad how he could become a Solvay employee!”
